  1. brother指“兄”或“弟”皆可,“兄”是“elder brother”,“弟”是“younger brother”。但除了必須分清是“兄”還是“弟”時外,習慣上不論“兄”還是“弟”,都用brother。在美國通常不用elder brother,而用older brother。與brother相對應的陰性名詞是sister。
  2. brother可指親兄弟,也可指同父異母或同母異父兄弟,或繼父與其前妻或繼母與其前夫之子,不指堂或表兄弟。但引申可指“同行,同事”解。
  3. brother作“教友”“會友”解時,它的復數形式是brethren。
  4. brother可用作稱呼語。
